Okayama University ESD Promotion Center Co-hosts International Conference on Climate Change Education in Mongolia

Okayama University ESD Promotion Center held the “Third Meeting on Promoting Teacher Education for Climate Change Education through Collaboration between Asian Centers of Excellence on Education for Sustainable Development (ATECCE)” in collaboration with Mongolian National University of Education and National University of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from May 3 to 5. The conference was supported by UNESCO Beijing (UNESCO’s general headquarters for East Asia) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

More than forty university faculty members and graduate students from seventeen ESD research and education centers in nine Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines) participated in the conference, during which participants presented examples of good practice in teacher training and development for climate change education. Based on these presentations, participants also discussed the creation of a guide for promoting teacher education programs on climate change education in Asia.

Mongolia is one of the world’s top ten countries most affected by climate change. The effects of climate change are felt in all sectors of society, especially in the livestock and agricultural industries, making the promotion of climate change education an urgent issue.

As a result, the conference attracted a lot of attention in Mongolia, and it has been widely discussed on TV and other media.

Next year May, Okayama University will host the final international conference at Tsushima Campus.
