Okayama University Signs Cooperation Agreement with Kibichuo Town to Build an Innovative Model for Solving Regional Issues
On April 13, Okayama University signed a cooperation agreement with Kibichuo Town pertaining to a variety of issues, including regional revitalization, resource development and the achievement of the SDGs. Because of our emphasis on well-being and sustainability, Okayama University was invited to take up the role of lead architect in the Kibikogen City Super City Planning and Promotion Council in January 2021. Since then, the university has participated in numerous discussions in order to examine and draft a plan for the construction of a super city. On March 10, 2022, the plan was approved by the Cabinet Office National Strategic Special Zones Advisory Council and the area has since been designated as a National Strategic Special Zone (Digital Rural Health Special Zone). (Cabinet decision on April 12, 2022.)
As such, Okayama University has decided to establish an even closer and more systematic relationship with Kibichuo Town by concluding a cooperation agreement. The agreement, which is based on a fruitful and trusting relationship, not only covers the Digital Rural Health Special Zone project, but also a wide range of issues, including revitalization, resource development and promotion of the SDGs.
On the day of the signing ceremony, Okayama University President MAKINO Hirofumi signed the agreement with Kibichuo Town Mayor YAMAMOTO Masanori. Afterwards, President Makino said, “As a comprehensive university, we utilize the knowledge and technology available across a wide range of fields, forming an “all-Okadai” system. This system has allowed us to create an “innovative model for solving regional issues” and I hope that it will lead to the achievement of local SDGs*”. Mayor Yamamoto also remarked, “Through our collaboration with Okayama University, we will be able to provide cutting-edge services that utilize digital technology and contribute to the development of local communities and the resolution of regional issues. I hope that this project will become a model for other mountainous regions facing similar problems”.
*Local SDGs
A concept that promotes maximizing the strengths of local regions through mutual support and resource sharing while taking into account the unique characteristics of each region, maintaining self-reliance and encouraging decentralization.
