Second Group of Young Female Scientists from the UNCTAD Short-Term Program Visits President Nasu

The second group of young female scientist (from Botswana) participating in the 2024 "Young Female Scientist Programme in Japan," a collaborative research and training course for young female scientists from developing countries, operated by Okayama University and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), paid a courtesy visit to President NASU Yasutomo on November 20. The visit was attended by Vice President YOKOI Atsufumi (Global Engagement) and Professor HONDA Tomoyuki of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, who is the supervising faculty for the young female researchers. During the visit, the researchers introduced themselves and their research. President Nasu introduced relevant initiatives at Okayama University and encouraged the researchers in their work.

Following the meeting, the young female researchers had a lunch meeting with Vice President Yokoi and Associate Professor Khalmirzaeva Saida of the Institute of Global Human Resource Development, deepening exchanges. Additionally, as part of their cultural experience, they visited Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden, where they had the opportunity to try wearing kimono and experiencing matcha tea, learning about Japanese culture and the history of Okayama.

Okayama University and UNCTAD signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement in January 2020, making us the first university in the world to do so, with the goal of fostering talent in science, technology, and innovation (STI) for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on this agreement, the "Young Female Scientist Programme in Japan" provides short-term joint research and training courses (ranging from two weeks to one month) for young female scientists from developing countries in Africa and ASEAN nations that are members of UNCTAD.

Okayama University will continue to strengthen its collaboration with UNCTAD, a central UN agency responsible for STI for SDGs, and promote human resource development for STI for SDGs from Okayama to the world, actively sharing these efforts both domestically and internationally.
