Okayama University Representatives Attend the Send-Off Ceremony for the Japanese Delegation to the One Young World 2024 Global Summit of Next-Generation Leaders

On August 25, a Japanese delegation send-off event took place in Tokyo before the 2024 One Young World (OYW) Global Summit for Next Generation Leaders in Montreal, Canada. Okayama University representatives Mr. Lin Thu Kha Htaik, a third-year student in the Discovery Program for Global Learners, and Ms. TERASHIMA Miyu, a fifth-year student in the Medical School, attended the event. This year marks the 14th time OYW has been held, and Okayama University has sent students annually to the OYW Summit since the Bangkok summit in 2015.

The send-off ceremony began with opening remarks by Mr. OKUBO Kimihito, President of One Young World Japan Committee, followed by the Honorable Mr. Chenier La Salle, Diplomat and the Representative of the Quebec Government Office in Japan, who introduced Quebec's rich natural environment and history of welcoming many immigrants, highlighting that Quebec is the only French-speaking region in North America. He also mentioned Quebec's prominence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and the aerospace industry, encouraging participants to “Experience the creative spirit of Quebec by visiting the city and interacting with locals during the OYW Montreal summit. I hope you will maintain the networks you create at OYW and stay connected with Quebec in the future.”

The event was followed by a networking session between OYW ambassadors who have participated in the summit in the past, current university students, and other young professionals who will attend the Montreal summit. Participants engaged in discussions about social issues of interest and the workshops they plan to attend during the summit. The OYW Japan delegation, including Mr. Lin Thu Kha Htaik and Ms. TERASHIMA Miyu, will participate in international sessions, discussions, workshops, and networking at the Montreal Convention Center on September 18-21 on topics aligned with this year’s five themes: AI, Health Equity, Indigenous Voices, Peace, and the Climate and Ecological Crisis, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the framework.
