On April 16, a delegation from Okayama University, including President NASU Yasutomo and Vice Executive Director Prof. KANO Mitsunobu (in charge of SDGs, Diversity, and Inclusion), visited Geneva, Switzerland, to attend an international conference and pay courtesy calls to relevant organizations in Geneva.

The visit to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was marked by significant discussions with Dr. Shamika Sirimanne, Director of Division on Technology and Logistics at UNCTAD, and her team. They delved into the short-term program 'Joint Research and Training Course for Young Female Scientists from Developing Countries: Young Female Scientist Programme in Japan' and their plans to expand its reach and enrich its content. This expansion, agreed upon by both parties, is a testament to Okayama University's commitment to human resource development. As a result of these discussions, Okayama University and UNCTAD agreed to increase the number of participating countries and incorporate a more comprehensive range of topics in the program, thereby enhancing the learning experience for young female scientists.

The visit to the World Health Organization (WHO) was marked by a significant meeting with Dr. NAKATANI Yukiko, the Assistant Director-General assigned by the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan. Dr. Nakatani introduced her current work at WHO, her experience promoting vaccination against COVID-19, and her tenure in Okayama as Director of the Okayama Prefectural Department of Health and Welfare. This meeting underscored Okayama University's active role in global health and its commitment to contributing to the worldwide health agenda.

During the visit to H.E. Mr. OIKE Atsuyuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva, President Nasu introduced the details of the joint program with UNCTAD, which is being promoted as direct collaboration with UN agencies. This visit was particularly significant, underscoring the university's active role in international collaborations and its commitment to global engagement. H.E. Mr. Oike emphasized that universities, as academia, are not usually bound by factors such as politics and conflict but can conduct exchanges in a positive and open-minded manner and contribute to solving global issues in the future.

Okayama University is steadfast in its commitment to actively foster human resources development, including recruiting exceptional international students and researchers. The direct collaboration with the United Nations and other international organizations is a distinctive effort and a testament to Okayama University’s unwavering dedication to global engagement and human resource development.
