Engineering Students Participate in "SDGs Field Environmental Studies Overseas Short-Term Training Program" at National Taiwan University
From August 13 to 22, students in the Environmental Management Course of the School of Engineering at Okayama University participated in the "SDGs Field Environmental Studies Overseas Short-Term Training Program" held at National Taiwan University (NTU). 7 second-year students and 7 third-year students from Okayama University participated in the program, studying field environmental studies with 15 undergraduate and 1 graduate students from NTU. The course was led by Professor MAEDA Morihiro, Professor MORI Yasushi, Associate Professor SOMURA Hiroaki, and Assistant Professor KATSUHARA Koki of the Faculty of Environmental, Life, Natural Sciences and Technology, who also provided on-site guidance.
At the opening ceremony, Dean Yu-Pin Lin of NTU's College of Bioresources and Agriculture, Department Chair Hwa-Lung Yu of the Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering, and Okayama University Professor Maeda and Assistant Professor Katsuhara gave opening remarks, followed by explanations about the university and Taiwan. Participating students attended a total of seven lectures (by Professors Hu, Shiau, Chiang, Wang, Yam, Liao, and Cheng) and had the opportunity to experience cutting-edge research. The field trip included visits to the Yangmei Water Resource Recovery Center, the Shi Men Management Office of the Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Engineering Research Center Foundation, and the Wen Qing Shui Yuan Water Resource Recovery Center. In the final debriefing session, the students were divided into mixed groups from Okayama University and NTU to summarize what they have learnt and present them in front of other groups and faculty members.
Through these activities, students from both universities deepened their understanding of local environmental issues and differences in research approaches. They also had the pleasure of communicating in English with students from other countries. Since this exchange program is a two-way program, NTU students will next visit Okayama University in September to learn about field environmental research with students from Okayama University.
During this field visit, we were able not only to exchange students and faculty members, but also to discuss research issues and the establishment of an educational system that we can jointly work on in the future. This training program was made possible with support from WESCO Co., Ltd, Japan. We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude.
