The Faculty of Education of Okayama University held a seminar in collaboration with the Faculty of Education of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in Ljubljana, Slovenia over a four-day period from September 14 to 17, on the “Formation of Centre of Excellence to Promote Teacher Education for ESD (Education for Sustainable Development): Toward Achieving SDGs,” a Type A. Advanced Research Networks initiative under the JSPS Core-to-Core Program.
The seminar was titled “Bridging Ideas Between Asia and Europe for Promoting Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education,” and welcomed approximately 45 faculty and graduate students from universities in Japan, Slovenia and Norway who were participating in the project (from Japan, there were 23 attendees including TAKASE Atsushi, Dean of the Faculty of Education). In the seminar, there were presentations on practical case studies of ESD in teacher education and school education, and their results. Based on these presentations, there was also a discussion about the best way to promote ESD teacher education in the future.
MOROHASHI Jun, the Acting Chief of Section of Education for Sustainable Development, UNESCO (Paris headquarters) was invited to the seminar, and she gave a lecture on the current status and challenges of global implementation of ESD. University faculty from project cooperating institutions (the Netherlands and the Philippines) also gave lectures online. There were many thought-provoking talks that gave insights about how to proceed with the project in future. The next joint seminar will be held in March 2023 at the Tsushima Campus of Okayama University.
