Experience–based event for 3R/4R promotion

Outline of activity

  • Promotion of 2R (Reduce and Reuse) activities and participation of young people is significant issue to establish sustainable society.
  • In collaboration with an drinking and eating event “Harenomi-no nishigawa” which had a lot of young participants, an experience-based event for 3R/4R promotion was held focusing on the young people. The event was funded by Okayama city.
  • The experience-based event featured the legend of local hero “Momotaro” who wiped out ogres (“Oni” in Japanese). Four missions relating to 4Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) were imposed on participants by experiences, games and quizzes. By fulfilling the missions, the participants received the cards with the supporting animals appeared in “Momotaro” legend (e.g. dog, pheasant and monkey) and 3R/4R information. Then, they challenged the last mission to wipe out “Oni”, a subtle pun of the word “Gomi” which means waste in Japanese, by quizzes for 3R/4R at Gomi-ga-shima (Waste Island).
  • To measure the effect of event, the participants answered the questionnaires just after the event to survey the recognitions and attitudes for 3R/4R. Some of the participants also cooperated with the follow-up survey 3 months later.
  • This activity suggests the framework of industry-government-academia-citizen cooperation for 3R/4R promotion. It can contribute to achieve the SDGs in Okayama by applying 3R/4R activities in the real world through repeating the PDCA cycle of promotion and effect measurement under the cooperation among the entire community.
