Social background

　While harmful algal bloom (HAB) damages coastal ecosystem, research progress to date in Japan allowed development of effective countermeasures.  On the other hand, several oceanic areas in the world are recently affected by frequent and massive HAB occurrence due to the climate change and industrializations. In Republic of Chile, fisheries, their second biggest industry is particularly damaged by the phenomenon.

Outline of the activities

  Conduct wide area monitoring using cutting-edge technology to understand HAB mechanism form the environmental microbiology point of view.

Expected outcome

 　Understand the cause of HAB and design the HAB forecast system.
