Next Generation Smart Machining Methods
Background
Die and mold are essential tools to realize high-cost performance for industrial production. Performance of industrial products can be improved by high-functionalization of die and mold, which may leads to technology innovation and new industry creation. In conventional die and mold manufacturing processes, the surface finishing and coating are generally carried out after shaping, but these processes take a long time, resulting in obstructions of product diversification and cost reduction. New high-precision machining technology also has been required for high-functionalization of industrial products.
Aim and outline
A novel EDM finishing method, in which shaping, surface finishing and coating are continuously performed with one ED machine using metal powder mixed working fluid for short time is investigated to establish innovative smart machining method adding superior surface functions on metal mold surface, such as high hardness and high corrosion resistance. High-efficient surface smoothing of metal molds and metal parts by large-area EB irradiation and curved hole drilling method by EDM using a suspended ball electrode are also developed. Furthermore, next-generation high-performance multi slicing method of silicon ingot for solar cell is researched.
