Wheelchair Tennis Volunteer
Backgrounds
Internationally, Japan has lagged behind in volunteerism, but in recent years, in a social context where volunteerism is becoming more and more active, the Okayama University Tennis Club, in cooperation with the "Okayama Wheelchair Volunteer Bank" (Representative: Mr. Masatoshi Taki, an alumnus of Okayama University), is conducting volunteer activities that can be done close to home through tennis. We have participated in the "Wheelchair Tennis School" and the "Okayama Prefecture Governor's Cup Wheelchair Tennis New Mixed Tournament" held by the Okayama Prefecture Wheelchair Tennis Association as volunteers since 2011.
Objectives
The goal is to develop friendship and expand the circle of friends while honing tennis skills together with wheelchair players.
Initiatives
The first Wheelchair Tennis School was opened in January 2001 and has been held once a month since then. In November of the same year, the "Okayama Prefecture Governor's Cup 1st Wheelchair Tennis New Mixed Tournament" began and has been held on the first Sunday of every year since. Since 2011, members of the University's tennis club have volunteered at the Tennis School and New Mix Tournament.
Outcome
We believe that we are contributing to the achievement of SDG Goal 3: Good health and well-being. It also contributes to fostering a spirit of volunteerism among members of the University's tennis team. We believe that this has led to the continuation of sustainable activities, as participants who attended the wheelchair tennis school as students later participate in the wheelchair tennis school and wheelchair tennis new-mix tournaments as volunteers.
