Connecting the SDGs x Comprehensive Learning Time through Qualities and Abilities

During the Comprehensive Learning Time at this school, we encourage students to be interested in the connection between themselves and real life and society, to respect people, objects, things, society and nature, and to work independently and proactively on exploratory learning by discovering issues and actually working to solve them. So far, we have dealt with a wide range of learning fields, including biodiversity, the environment, urban development, welfare, peace and multicultural coexistence, so that children can feel familiar with the SDGs. In addition to these efforts, in AY2021, we are attempting to connect representative units of each grade through qualities and abilities.
Specifically, we are working to link the “abilities and attitudes to be emphasized in the learning curriculum from the perspective of ESD” and the “abilities and humanity toward learning, etc.” that we want to foster in the Comprehensive Learning Time, as shown in the figure on the right. Furthermore, we set the attitudes to be fostered according to the developmental stage at each grade, thereby making a connection between the units. In this way, we encourage the children to continue to be interested in the connection between themselves and real life and real society. Through these efforts focusing on the connections, we aim to encourage the children to cultivate the attitudes necessary for the creation of a sustainable society, such as the attitude of discovering issues on their own and working with others to solve them.
