Realization of hardware design considering electromagnetic environment

 Social background

In the IoT era, the electromobility with wireless communication such as autonomous cars and drones is required to design considering the electromagnetic (EM) environment, that is electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design. People should naturally expect the achievements of EMC performance without unintentional EM emissions and of normal operation without disturbance by EM noise emitted by surrounding electronic devices. However, the EMC design is not easy to achieve.

Objectives

Most EM noise problems become apparent in the testing process. Failure in the system testing due to unsatisfaction of the EMC performance leads to significant redesign and addition of noise suppression components, thereby increasing development costs. Our goal is to realize EMC design in the early stage of the design process.

Overview

To realize EMC design, it is indispensable to clarify the mechanisms of EM noise generation and develop useful simulation models in designing. A prediction of EM noise generation by model-based simulation in the early stage of the design process can avoid failure in the system testing due to unsatisfaction of the EMC performance. Since EM noise emissions including cryptographic information may leak secret information, the threat of information leakage has been recently pointed out. Therefore, we also propose evaluation indices for hardware design to eliminate information leakage.

Expected effects

The design and development of electrical and electronic equipment and devices based on EMC design will contribute to reduce energy usage in manufacturing process and eliminate chemical substances and hazardous waste by reducing noise suppression components. The design without rework will promote productivity improvement and work style reforms.
