Program for developing human resources in Africa and ASEAN countries in cooperation with UNCTAD

Background and purposes of activities:

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a core organization of the United Nations that comprehensively addresses issues related to trade and development, finance, investment, technology, and sustainable development. It is aimed at maximizing trade, investment and development opportunities for developing countries, assisting developing countries facing problems arising from globalization, and integrating them into the global economy on an equal footing. In January 2020, Okayama University became the world’s first university to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UNCTAD to develop human resources in accordance with the framework of “Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals” (STI for SDGs). Based on the MoU, we are providing two human resources development programmes.

Overview of activities:

As a short-term researcher acceptance programme, the “Joint research and training courses for young female scientists from developing countries” was established. Under this programme, young female researchers from Committee on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) member countries from Africa and ASEAN member countries conduct research activities at Okayama University for a period of two weeks to one month.
As a long-term program, the “PhD programme for young scientists from developing countries” was established. Under this programme, master's degree holders from CSTD member countries from Africa and ASEAN member countries study at Okayama University for a period of three years to obtain a doctoral degree.

Expected effects:

Signing the MoU between Okayama University and the UNCTAD is considered to be a role model for universities around the world as an approach to achieving the SDGs. It is expected to promote the university-wide “whole institution’s approach” toward SDG achievement and contribute to improving the global environment and the wellbeing of all people.
