Development of Next Generation Radiation Cancer Therapy and International Standardization Efforts

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is an innovative cancer radiotherapy method with boron neutron reaction through neutron irradiation with boron isotope 10B taken into cancer cells, thereby maintaining a high degree of quality of life (QOL) for patients. In April 2017, Okayama University (OU) established the Neutron Therapy Research Center (NTRC) for BNCT and Neutron Medicine, the first national university research center. The center is expanding new research areas, including the development of new boron agents, precision BNCT, and the expansion of applications to the AYA generation cancer patients.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headquartered in Vienna, Austria, is responsible for establishing guidelines for radiotherapy including BNCT, and OU is promoting international collaborative projects with the IAEA. On September 26, 2022, OU was designated as BNCT's first IAEA Collaborating Center and signed the agreement. On July 3-7, 2023, a BNCT workshop was held at OU with 27 participants from 15 countries as a project of the IAEA Collaborating Center at OU. To contribute to the mission of forming a center for international BNCT research and education, OU fully supports this project.
