Social background

   The premises of Okayama University include sites that contain buried cultural properties in on-campus ruins. These buried cultural properties and sites that contain buried cultural properties are required to be protected as the common property of the people under the Act on Protection of Cultural Properties.

Objectives

   To aim to protect and hand down the buried cultural properties on the premises of Okayama University appropriately (research and studies / compilation / preservation and storage / preparation of excavation reports, etc.)

Overview

   Through excavation, we make records of the ruins on the premises of the university that are forced to be broken up due to construction on the campus, and publish these records as excavation reports. Also, we make efforts to appropriately store hundreds of thousands of unearthed earthenware and stoneware. Regarding fragile wooden items, we store them after completing preservation treatment.

Expected effects

   By conducting excavations and publishing excavation reports, the results of the excavations can be communicated to the world so that anyone can have access to them. Furthermore, by appropriately managing unearthed remains, precious cultural properties on the premises of the university can be handed down into the future.
