Example
Project for genetic inheritance education “Genetic Cafe”
Background
Genetic information obtained from genetic and genomic medicine, which is rapidly expanding, is useful knowledge for patients and those who are related to them by blood. Genetic information can be utilized for disease development prediction and health management for patients and is useful to those who are related to them by blood in their own health management.
Overview
We planned the Genetic Cafe, an educational activity that anyone can participate in, and will carry out this activity as an initiative to increase opportunities to think about genetic inheritance, thereby achieving the following SDGs, “4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and “3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,” in particular. For past initiatives and requests, visit https://genetic.cafe. Furthermore, we aim to clarify an effective educational methodology by evaluating change in subjects’ knowledge and awareness before and after lectures by using questionnaires.
Effects
We aim to have two-way and omnidirectional exchanges of information among the general public, patients and health-care personnel. We expect that this activity will raise people’s interest in hereditary cancers and various other diseases, leading to achieving better health management and disease prevention in communities. This activity will help everyone to have accurate knowledge, thereby reducing early mortality from hereditary cancers.
