Innovative gene therapy for liver cancer

Background

Liver cancer is poor-prognostic cancer that kills about 740,000 people worldwide and about 30,000 people per year in Japan. The 5-year survival rate is 35.9%, which is the lowest among major cancer patients in Japan, and the unmet medical needs are high. Thus, the development of a novel therapeutic agent is desired.

Objectives

To establish the novel gene therapy for liver cancer using an adenoviral vector carrying Reduced Expression in Immortalized Cells gene (Ad-REIC).

Outline

We promote clinical trial for liver cancer with Ad-REIC and conduct basic research to enhance the therapeutic effect of Ad-REIC.

Expected effect

The establishment of effective therapy for liver cancer improves the prognosis of the patients and contributes to prolonging the healthy life span.
