Promotion of the Diversity & Inclusion

In January 2009, Okayama University established the Organization for Diversity Management to promote employee diversity in gender, nationality, age, disability, and other measures, and to cultivate a diversity culture. Diversity Management is composed of four offices: Gender Equality; Next-Generation Support; Disabled Support; and Seniors Support. Planning and implementing various measures through these four offices, we aim to promote sustainable development of the organization with a long-term perspective, maintaining a work-life balance for all staff members.

Specifically, we created the Woman Tenure Track (WTT) system to recruit excellent young female researchers internationally and the Female Faculty Special Promotion system to increase the number of female faculty members promoted to higher positions. We also built the Service Providing Center for staff with disabilities, which offers various kinds of services on campus such as  cleaning and gardening, in the aim of employment promotion of the handicapped. In addition to these direct employment measures, we have  enhanced the three on-campus childcare facilities (for general childcare and childcare for sick or recovering children) in order to create an environment that makes it easier to balance the demands of work and family. We also have supported researchers, including male researchers during reinstatement after life events such as childbirth, childcare, and nursing care, through reinstatement support grants and assignment of research support staff.

Furthermore, in May 2021, we established the Diversity and Inclusion Policy, declaring that Okayama University will be a university where all members, having diverse attributes and personalities, understand and respect each other's values and can grow together by making the most of their individual characteristics. From now on, we will make steady progress in our efforts to realize this policy.”
