Cooperation with the Old “Mimasaka District” Area

Background

The northern area of Okayama prefecture used to be called the “Mimasaka (beautiful tree)” district and was proud of its rich natural and cultural beauty. However, the area suffers from an aging and shrinking population issues, and it is necessary to build sustainable communities and develop a next generation who can support the area.

Outline

OU and 10 municipalities in the area, together with the Tsuyama Chambers of Commerce and Industry, signed the MoU to cooperate in regenerating the area and in developing human resources. It is expected to utilize the knowledge of OU in (1) education, (2) analysis and solutions for community issues, and (3) developing new industries. From FY 2018-2019, the project conducted surveys to understand local situation and needs, public lectures, and hold an "Ideathon“, SDGs Science Café, and “OU=Mimasaka Day” together with local high school students and communities.

Expected Outcome

A. To solve some of the issues in the local communities through collaboration of governments, businesses, and civil society, and B. To develop next-generation leadership.
