Why are certain diseases difficult to treat by medication? Our hypothesis is that certain microenvironmental features of the diseases foci such as abnormal vasculature and fibrosis impede drugs from reaching its target. We aim to test this hypothesis in several types of intractable cancers and also pulmonary hypertension. We study cells from human disease foci by applying novel technologies through interdisciplinary collaborations. These include nanomedicine, 3D culture, and microfluidics. They have proven instrumental in recapitulating important aspects of disease that traditional methods have failed to address. Our studies will likely shed light on novel therapeutic strategies to modulate the disease microenvironment for better efficacy.
