Dynamic analyses of environmental pollution materials by Geostatistics and Geographical Information System

Motivations and Objectives

(1) Estimate environmental conditions that chlorophyll are easy to accumulate on the Gulf of Finland and control the eutrophication which are caused by the human activities. (2) Estimate the environmental conditions where PM 2.5 are likely to accumulate in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture to manage the quality of the air to reduce the adverse environmental impact for the citizens the city.

Overview of activities

Conducting dynamic analysis of environment pollutants using geostatistics and Geographic Information Systems. (1) By an international collaboration with Professor Malve, Dr. Taskinen and Dr. Attila in the Finnish Environment Institute, analyze the data by the earth observation satellites and examine the chlorophyll concentration distribution model throughout on the Gulf of Finland. (2) Analyze the observation data about PM 2.5 published by the Okayama Prefectural Environmental Health Center and examine the PM 2.5 concentration distribution model over the urban area of the south of Okayama Prefecture. Both activities are accepting the International Internship students (2017 FY: 1 student , 2018 FY: 2 students, 2019 FY: 2 students).

Expected effects

(1) Make the oceans available in a sustainable manner by reducing the eutrophication currently occurring in the Gulf of Finland and balancing land activities and marine pollution prevention. (2) To realize sustainable cities by suppressing the over-concentration of the PM 2.5 which are currently occurring in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture and achieving some balance between economic activity and  air quality control of the city.
