Recovery support of farmland by barley

Malting barley cultivars developed by using barley strains preserved at Okayama University are cultivated in the Tunami affected farmland of Miyagi Prefecture in the Great East Japan Earthquake and West Japan heavy rain in Kurashiki Manbi-cho to support the recovery of farmland.
Haruna Nijo HKI, developed by Okayama University, has been cultivated in Miyagi Prefecture at inland Kami-cho and at the tsunami-affected areas of Higashimatsushima since 2014. From the harvested barley grain “Recovery Ale" is brewed and marketed.
Aiming for original beer production, a malt production plant was first imported from the United States into an NPO in Kurashiki City and succeeded in producing malt. Since 2017, it has become possible to consistently develop raw materials, malt, and brew from pure prefecture-produced varieties from Okayama University and original equipment in Kurashiki Mibi-cho. However, due to heavy rains in West Japan in 2018, the farmland where the production plant and paddy rice barley cropped alternately were submerged, but as a result of the hard work of producers and volunteers, barley cultivation began in the fall, and the quality of barley was produced. Currently, we are proceeding with import procedures for the UK-made malt production plant, and are fully reconstructing it.
