Neuroendovascular simulation practice: For clinical clerkship in Neurosurgery

Background

Surgical practice is critically important in clinical clerkship for medical students. The recent problems related to COVID-19 limit surgical practice and reduce the opportunities to develop valuable clinical experience, especially in surgical departments.

Purpose for medical students

1. To give chances of simulation experience of neuroendovascular treatment
2. To realize the importance of pre-operative simulation
3. To increase the knowledge on anatomy and pathology of neuroendovascular treatment and interest to be good doctors, including neurosurgeons

Summary of activities

We have used an endovascular treatment simulator, ‘VIST’ for medical students. Recently, we have established the way to make a hollow cerebral aneurysm model created by a 3D printer based on the real patients’ image data to enhance the simulation experience. Medical students can also experience how to treat an aneurysm, which will give them a real sensation of neuroenvovascular surgeons.

Expectations

Our approaches are to make medical students understand the difficulty of neuroendovascular treatment by giving them a simulation experience similar to real clinical practiceAdditionally, it is expected that this method will encourage medical students to realize the responsibility as medical professionals through training and successful experiences in practical training.
