Research  Regarding Decision-Making Processes for People with Dementia

Guidelines and institutions regarding decision making for end of life care or daily life support for people with dementia have been developed in recent years. However, decision making in healthcare for people with dementia is not yet well developed and is ethically arguable. By working on this as an ethical issue, our research aims to promote patient well-being while supporting those individuals involved in the patient’s end-of-life care.

Outline of activities

Based on theoretical studies on the factors to be respected in decision making for dementia patients (Hikasa 2020, etc.) and interviews with family members and professionals involved with dementia patients (Kudo, Hikasa 2021, etc.), we work on defining and disseminating appropriate decision making processes for people with dementia. Through providing topics and discussion in workshops, interviews and seminars with various parties, we promote opportunities to consider and discuss issues related to decision making at the end of life. Through these efforts of promoting the welfare of people with dementia and those involved in their care and lifelong learning opportunities for people in various positions to consider such processes of decision making, contributions to realizing SDGs goals 3 and 4 are expected.
