Gastrointestinal endoscopic diagnosis of early gastric cancer using artificial intelligence

Background

According to WHO statistics, the number of patients suffering from gastric cancer is 4th among cancer in the world, and the number of death is 2nd after lung cancer, and it is one of the major cancer in the world. In Japan, the technology of gastrointestinal endoscopy is excellent in the world, and in recent years, the early detection and the early treatment by endoscopy have reduced the mortality rate of gastric cancer. However, its diagnostic ability varies among each endoscopist.

Objectives

The purpose of our research is to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to endoscopic diagnosis of gastric cancer, to equalize diagnostic ability, and to perform endoscopic diagnosis accurately in any medical institution in the world.

Outline of Activities

We will construct an endoscopic diagnosis system for gastric cancer using AI by analyzing and using endoscopic images of gastric cancer in the past at Okayama University Hospital.

Expected effects

By establishing an endoscopic diagnosis system using AI, the diagnostic ability necessary for early detection of gastric cancer and selection of an appropriate treatment will be uniformed and improved.
Ultimately, the use of this technology is expected to reduce the mortality rate of gastric cancer worldwide.
