Disaster prevention research to save lives from frequent floods under climate change

Research mission 1

In recent years, large-scale floods caused by heavy rainfall has frequently occurred. In order to propose more advanced flood control measure, we have developed a novel flood flow analysis model that can efficiently consider the effects of features (buildings, roads, etc.), and applied it to actual flood disasters. In addition, we have recently been developing a coupling model with debris flow analysis and evacuation analysis shown in figures.

Research mission 2

River forestation has been increasing the risk of  flooding under recurrent extreme rainfall events in Japan. Resilient river channel designs require the detailed surveying data and vegetation conditions along the long river-reach. Earlier measurement methods need a lot of cost, and then limit both the  quantity and quality of data due to human field works in shallow-water areas. For such practical issues, we have recently examined a cost-saving and efficient method using airborne laser devices.
