International PBL on Sports Days in the

Social background and purpose of activity

In the Kingdom of Cambodia, achieving high-quality education has been delayed due to internal conflict. The Ministry of Education has been taking the lead on QPE (Quality Physical Education: UNESCO, 2015) initiatives, but this concept has not been popularized within the country.
In this project, the MoEYS(Cambodia Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport), Okayama University, Hearts of Gold (NPO), and local governments and teachers within Okayama Prefecture have collaborated to hold unique Kingdom of Cambodia Sports Days since 2013 with the purpose of developing content and building a framework so that QPE is available at every school. Through this Sports Day project, government officials in the MoEYS, local elementary school teachers, and students from Okayama University participate in PBL (Project Based Learning) to educate teachers with an ESD perspective.

Activity overview and expansion

In 2013, project members from the MoEYS held a Sports Day at an elementary school in Siem Reap. The Kingdom of Cambodia confirmed its purpose and value and clarified its position in their physical education class policy. These were also held in Svay Rieng Province, Battambang Province, and other regions and schools, while approximately 60 university students experienced on-location in-depth learning over 5 years. A website on Sports Days in the Khmer language was opened in 2018, creating a platform to widely disseminate information.
